For a long time the scientific community in Korea has refrained from engaging with creationists, afraid that doing so could boost the credibility of the group. However, silence is no longer an option.

What is Evolution?

The word "evolution", which comes from the Latin for revealing or unrolling has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has developed, both in science as well as elsewhere. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species changed into other species in a certain way. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist student who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.
More recently evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living creatures develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival or the ability to reproduce offspring. As time passes the genetic variability could cause the emergence of completely new biological functions or physical traits in the population. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit teaching evolution. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is a campaign for textbooks that cover the evolution of horses and their Avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.
While these are disturbing developments, it is also important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution is based on a variety of sources, including fossils, genetics, and even the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.
The vast majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this support vary. The most well-known kind of creationist is called the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in the exact way that is described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the first six days of creation is literal and that the universe and the life on Earth were created just recently.
OECs are not as well-known, but they're just as committed to their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is an untruth.
Both forms of creationism reject the notion that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origin of life on Earth. They assert that evolution is impossible, because it requires miracles. The founders of modern scientific thought resisted miracles out of fear they could lose their credibility.
Some creationists accept both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and call their view "theistic evolution." This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of the created species." The theory suggests that God creates species from scratch and then allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes eventually will result in new species that are similar to the original.
Other creationists believe that God created the universe and all living things in a single event, called the Great Flood. They believe that all the species of the beginning were created at the same time and that they gradually evolved. They also reject the concept of abiogenesis and argue that the self-replicating creation of organisms from nonliving matter is unattainable.
In general, the creationists oppose teaching evolution in schools. This position is supported by a variety of professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, certain scientists and educational institutions are more flexible and permit the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curricula.
What is Creationism?

The publishers of high school textbooks have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their books. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, called the Archeopteryx. The next goal is to eliminate portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research and also on human evolution.

Its mission is to cut out what it sees as the "atheist materialism" that paints an unhopeful worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists across the country. A survey of trainee biology teachers found that about half do not believe in evolution. The KACR has achieved many things in the past through lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences with an orthodox creationist perspective, which attracted the attention of college communities. In 1991, a professor together with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught in the present.
On August 6 and 7 the 7th of August 1993, which coincided with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six foreign lecturers, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given lectures on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR intends to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
